Era 4: Pre-Civil War Ingenuity Poster
Ingenuity Cannot Be Silenced
1790–1865
Innovation does not always happen in laboratories. Sometimes it begins in a workshop, a field, a kitchen, or a community facing extraordinary challenges.
During the years leading up to the Civil War, enslaved and free Black Americans contributed valuable skills and knowledge in agriculture, mechanical design, construction, and everyday problem-solving.
Despite severe restrictions on freedom, education, and recognition, their ingenuity endured.
This poster celebrates the creativity and technical abilities of Black craftspeople and innovators while encouraging viewers to examine the barriers that prevented many contributions from receiving proper credit.
Your Discovery Challenge: How do people create solutions despite barriers?
Ideal for history classrooms, youth programs, libraries, makerspaces, and spaces that celebrate resilience, craftsmanship, and innovation.
