What This Scavenger Hunt Is

The Innovations Scavenger Hunt is a guided journey through 8 eras of Black innovation — from the earliest African civilizations to the modern digital age. Each era includes:

• Real inventors and their real inventions

• The historical conditions they worked under

• The freedoms and limitations they faced

• A Reflection Challenge that connects their story to your own life

But here’s what makes it a hunt:

You’re not just reading. You’re searching. Every era gives you clues to find inventions hidden in plain sight — in your home, your school, your neighborhood. Things you use every day that came from the minds of Black inventors who were never given credit in your textbooks.

By the end, you’ll have discovered something that changes how you see everything.

The 8 Eras You’ll Explore

Here’s the journey you’ll take:

• Era 1 — Pre-Ancient Egyptian Times (The Era of Observation, Invention & Early African Science (Before 3100 BC – 332 BC)
• Era 2 — Classical & Medieval African Kingdoms (The Era of Empires, Trade & Scholarship (332 BC – 1500 AD)
• Era 3 — Transatlantic Crossing & Early Colonial Knowledge (The Era of Forced Migration & Preserved Knowledge (1500 – 1790)
• Era 4 — Pre-Civil War Ingenuity (Resilience Under Oppression (1790 – 1865)
• Era 5 — Post-Emancipation & Reconstruction (Newfound Freedom & Community Rebuilding (1865 – 1900)
• Era 6 — Industrial Revolution & Great Migration (Rise of the Harlem Renaissance (1900 – 1930)
• Era 7 — Modernization & Civil Rights Era (Health Care & Civil Rights Progress (1930 – 1970)
• Era 8 — Digital Age & Future Frontiers Era (Modern Expansion (1970 – Present)
